Balayage vs Highlights: How to Choose Your Blonde

By the Atelier 10 Team · June 24, 2026
Quick answer

Balayage is hand-painted for a soft, low-maintenance grow-out, while highlights use foils for uniform, all-over brightness. At Atelier 10 Salon in DIFC, Dubai, our colourists usually recommend balayage for the local climate and highlights when you want maximum lift.

Two of the most-booked colour services at Atelier 10 sound similar but behave very differently once they grow out. Here is how our colour team helps you decide.

Start with the look you want

Before the technique, picture the finish. Highlights read as bright, even and graphic, light woven evenly from the root. Balayage reads as soft and sun-grazed, with depth kept near the roots and brightness drifting toward the ends. One is polished and uniform; the other is lived-in and organic.

How each is applied

Highlights are sectioned into foils so the lightener processes evenly and reaches right up to the root. Balayage is painted by hand, freehand, so the colourist controls exactly where light lands and how sharply it fades. That hand-painting is why no two balayage results are ever identical.

The maintenance question

Because highlights start at the root, regrowth becomes visible sooner and most clients return every six to eight weeks. Balayage is deliberately kept away from the root, so it grows out gently and many clients stretch to twelve weeks or more between appointments, a real advantage in Dubai's heat, where less frequent lightening means healthier hair.

The verdict

If you love consistent, all-over brightness and don't mind regular visits, highlights are the answer. If you want a natural glow that's forgiving as it grows, balayage wins. In your consultation we'll match the method to your base colour, hair condition and how often you realistically want to sit in the chair.

Frequently asked

Which lasts longer between appointments?
Balayage, because the colour is kept off the root and regrowth stays soft.
Can I combine both?
Yes, many clients pair a balayage base with a few face-framing foils for extra brightness where it matters most.
